XR:WA are providing a $50 discount on full registrations and a $30 discount on day passes. Both include access all areas, morning and afternoon teas, lunch and end-of day drinks.

Playup Perth Games Zone @ XR:WA Full Lineup Announced!

XR:WA, WA’s first festival of everything immersive reality and games is almost here and we’re super excited to announce the full amazing lineup for Playup Perth Games Zone that will be happening during the festival, proudly presented by Sentient Computing.

When: 12-14 July 2019 (9:30 to 5:15 daily), Pan Pacific Hotel Perth

What: a smorgasbord of local games on offer from super fun multiplayer games and quirky arcade shooters to award-winning love stories and quieter narrative driven games. If you’re a little unfamiliar with our dev community you’ll be blown away by what’s being created in this state.

Tickets: Free with an XR:WA Gold or Day pass or $10 individually, which also gets you access to the Spacecubed Games and Experience Emporium

GHOSTCAM by Amy Louise Doherty

GHOST CAM is an immersive, choose your own adventure where you search for ghosts to capture in a photo – at your own risk! Powered by 360 video, gaze-directed interactivity, and a pop culture obsession, this genre-jumping, virtual reality experience gets you up close with the supernatural and beyond.

Lost and Hound by Daisy Ale Soundworks

Lost and Hound is an investigative adventure so finely tuned that players of all abilities, including blindness, can rise to the challenge of using a dog’s heightened senses to track people that are lost.

Acrylica – Murdoch Student Group

Acrylica is a physics based puzzle game, where you control the physics paint that lets you traverse through a subway system.

Henosis by Odd Critter Games

Henosis is a mysterious 2D Platform Puzzler which leverages unique and surreal visuals Players are propelled into a weird and visceral world where they take control of a small, viscous blue blob as they must overcome obstacles, enemies and puzzles throughout each level while collecting tokens to open up the exit portal. The game uses unique player mechanics and abilities in order to traverse around platforms. 5 Levels are available in this demo.

Splatterpus by Oscar Brittain

Splatterpus is a fast-paced, yet contemplative Arcade shooter about raising a virtual pet. Shipwrecked on Planet Earth, the Splatterpus has only one hope for survival: YOU and your ability to rack up high scores (which is the traditional food of the Splatterpus, obviously). Adventure through 30 chapters, unlocking new colour palettes, soundscapes, and toys as you raise your Splatterpus and watch him evolve!

Ned by PeeBee Games

An open world platformer (metroidvania) based on Ned Kelly. The bush has been taken over by a toxic green pollution and Ned must find out how to stop it, and who is behind the army of evil clone animals.

Legacies by Salty Dog Studios

Meet Max, a young eco-vigilante searching for reconnection by retracing his mother’s mysterious past.
Search the open depths in your run down submarine in this narrative adventure game.

Little Bit Lost by King Tide Studios

Little Bit Lost is a survival voxel game where a molecular diminishment experiment has gone horribly wrong. You awaken to find that your world is an awful lot bigger. Fight to survive against ants, spiders and a variety of creepy crawlies in an effort to return yourself to normal size.

A Collection of small games by Hien Pham

Hien Pham (pronounced h-ee-uh-n fam) is a queer digital artist specializing in gentle and optimistic comics. He grew up in Vietnam on war stories before moving and finding a home in Australia. His work revolves around respite, around caring and loving and being loved and cared for. He explores his own experiences with body image, gray-asexuality, and mental health through multi-award nominated comics and interactive fiction.

A Collection of small games by Ellie Balson

Ellie Balson creates small, funny and meaningful videogames in her spare time and enjoys the flexibility that this process gives her to explore ideas and keep motivated. Ellie frequently exhibits at Potluck Collective. You can find a lot of her work on her ever expanding itch.io page.

Playup Perth Games Zone @ XR:WA tickets are on sale (and first round of games announced!)

We’re super excited to announce that tickets are now on sale for the Playup Perth Games Zone, presented by Sentient Computing, this July 12 to 14 at XR:WA — WA’s first festival of everything immersive reality and games!

Or level up your XR:WA experience with a weekend pass to the whole festival featuring all sorts of incredible VR/AR experiences, panels, workshops and talks from local and interstate creators (full XR:WA program here). There’s also a special XR:WA fellowship on offer for students and those who would otherwise be unable to attend due to financial limitations, and you can apply here.

Call for games for Playup Perth Games Zone at XR:WA (Presented by Sentient!)

Next Playup Event

We’ve got some big news! We’re running a special 3 day Playup Perth Games Zone (presented by our friends at Sentient Computing) as part of a brand new games and immersive reality festival, XR:WA.

This three day event, which runs as part of Revelation Film Fest,
will offer free exhibition spaces for the best and brightest WA-based game makers to show their completed and in development work to the public.

  • 9:30am – 5:00pm 12th – 14th of July
  • Pan Pacific Hotel, 207 Adelaide Terrace, Perth WA 6000

Submissions

We are currently accepting submissions for work to be included in for this three day showcase. Games that are in development and playable as well as finished work will be considered. We are looking for work from everyone in all stages of their career/journey, from students to newcomers to established creators.

SUBMISSIONS CLOSE 14th June!

Successful Applicants will be entitled to:

  • Free table space to exhibit your game within the Playup Perth Games Zone
  • Full access to XR:WA for up to 2 developers

Limited spots are available and will be offered to successful applicants. Selected games will be announced June 21.

Selection Criteria

We are looking for work from everyone in all stages of their career/journey, from students to newcomers to established creators. Games of all platforms/genres/types are welcome (VR, mixed reality, console, mobile, something we haven’t thought of yet…)
Some other things we’re looking out for:

  • Unexplored themes and points of view.
  • Telling new stories.
  • Approaching the videogame medium with unique mechanics or controllers.
  • Videogame execution is of a high quality.

Preference will be given to games currently in development or released within the last 18 months.

Playup Perth supports diversity in games in every sense of the word. Submissions from everyone and everyone, especially those under represented in the industry are welcomed and encouraged.

Playup Perth #15

Playup Perth is back this Friday with a big lineup of games for some pre-Perth Games Festival playtesting action.

Same set up as always, local game makers and their games mixed with chilled vibes, some snacks and cheap drinks!

New to play!

1. TeleBlast by Tim Velette

TeleBlast is an explosive, fast-paced, local multiplayer game where up to 4 players can take to the arena to outplay each other using teleporters that explode upon use.

 

2. Rhythm Hunter by Different Game Studio

Rhythm Hunter is a rhythmic rail shooter where you pursue a large monster across the city. It uses 2 rhythmic input schemes, aim focused rhythmic shooting and 5 key input. Clicking heads to music, the new way to shoot.

3. WOOZE – Ladies Who Lunch With Me by Ellie Balson

A short platformer music video experience.

 

4. Bongo Cowbellie by Nathan Scott

A parody, procedurally generated arcade shooter.

5. Panda Pilots by Echidna Studios

Hop in your plane and fly to rescue pandas. Don’t run out of fuel and don’t hit a mine or missile or you will fall out of the sky.

6. Monumental Indonesia by Jeremy Snyder

The Indonesian government is offering contracts to build monuments across the archipelago. Draft Transport cards and Building Contracts to move between the islands and build 5 monuments before your rivals. Corruption can help you get what you want, but it could be costly. Don’t be too hasty though because monuments in the cities are worth more points and there’s also a diversity bonus!

 

7. Project:Singularity by Glitched Umbrella Studio

Project:Singularity is a 2D Coop Puzzle/Platformer, revolving around 2 asymmetrical players working together to progress through a series of experiments for a dystopian mega corporation. Players must perceive and treat the world differently while still coordinating together if they want any hope of being successful test subjects!

8. Ned by PeeBee Games

Ned, an action platformer loosely based around the life of Ned Kelly (well, we stole his iconic image), only now, Ned needs to find out what has caused the animals to go crazy, and what’s all that green glowing ooze?

 

9. Fluttering Souls by Nurse Shark Games 

Fluttering Souls is based on the tale of The White Butterfly. An old Japanese story where the souls of loved ones take on the form of white butterflies to visit those who remain in the living world.

It is a 2 player strategy, set collection micro game; made up of 3 – 5 rounds. In each round, players take turns collecting butterflies which are worth victory points, either in a set or by themselves. The player that collects the most victory points at the end of a round is awarded a White Butterfly Token; a visit from a lost loved one. The first player to collect 3 White Butterfly Tokens is the winner.

 

10. Inti by Jose Zamalloa

Inti is a family board game for ages 8+ were players take the role of a forest spirit trying to save their tree from an illness plaguing the lands.
