Hello Playup Perthers!
Last month we hosted our first ever international playup, Playup Bali which filled up the local coworking space, Hubud, with more than 30 game enthusiasts to play 3 locally made games.
And I have yet another exciting announcement for March. Lisa Chu, Program Manager for HTC’s VIVE is going to be in town from Taiwan, so we’ll be throwing special VR-only Playup Perth night for her.
We have a few spots left if you want to show off your VR content (can be finished or in production) — email kate@gamesweplay.com.au if you’re interested.
See you on March 24!
Kate
Featured VR Games and Experiences
1.) Burning Candle Software‘s Boondoggle is a VR music visualizer built on its own small custom engine. It aims to use pretty shadertoy style ray-marching to make unique visual effects to music.
2.) Stirfire Studio‘s Symphony of the Machine. An ancient machine controls the weather and its creators are long gone. You must perform the ritual and come to understand its workings to save your crops.
3.) Savage Cabbage‘s The Drowning Dungeons. Every 5 years, the Lord and Lady of the Draemarian provinces “invite” a guest to escape from their Drowning dungeon. Should the poor soul escape they will be granted their reward of freedom, however if they perish, their soul and life essence is siphoned through the magic of the dungeon to the Lord and Lady, extending their lifespan and allowing them to continue to rule with an iron fist. Can you survive The Drowning Dungeons?

Happy New Year!
Playup Perth is partnering with Hubud, Ubud’s coworking and community space, to bring you the first ever international playup, Playup Bali!
As always, we’ll be featuring the latest and greatest local games in development from across Bali in a fun social setting (complete with a bar!), housed in Hubud’s beautiful and unique venue.
I’ll also be hosting a free VR/AR workshop the week before (Feb 9, also at Hubud), where you can try your hand at the new Playstation VR.
See you on the 16th, Bali!

Playup Perth Global Game Jam Special Edition
[/box] Hi Playupers!
Last weekend, game makers from around the world busted their bums to create amazing new games in just 48 hours as part of Global Game Jam (GGJ). Thanks to the efforts of Let’s Make Games, we had another great Perth contingent, with over 20 brand new local games being created.
Lucky for everyone, Playup Perth has partnered with SK and Let’s Make Games to present an evening of GGJ talks and games so that everyone has a chance to play the very latest Perth games, and meet the folks behind them.
It’s going to be an amazing night.
Oh, and a bit of housekeeping — you can also see the dates and book tickets for all future Playup Perth events here (for Fridays) and here (for Saturdays) up until August.
See you on the 26th!
Kate Raynes-Goldie, Director of Games and Interactive at FTI

We will be playtesting:
1.) Spiral Atlas’s Soon – That Dr Fang thinks she’s so special just because she solved global warming and never blew up any of Switzerland. But now you have a time machine and soon, soon they will ALL PAY.
A humourous science fiction visual novel teaching important lessons about teamwork, robots, and the nature of causality. Three endings as well as several bad timelines you have the chance to fix with time travel, all of which are laid out in the included walkthrough.
Available for Mac, Windows and Linux, and in a text based version.
2.) Spiral Atlas’s Northanger Abbey: The Game – Experience Jane Austen’s classic satirical romance in a whole new way. Dance, love, and discover the secrets of the Abbey. Choose one of three genders and five love/friendship interests, and see what lies beyond the pages of the novel.
3.) LittleFort’s Ballad of Crater: The Small Town at the End of the World – a spunky top down adventure game with afro-head bobbing and twin stick shooter elements. It’s set in ‘Crater Town’: A small town nestled in the crater left after the world ended. In the crater things are a little odd. Mutations and zombiefied creatures roam around in a jive pre-21st century limbo. Life is good for the town’s folk, but: Legend tells of a great rain and, as water runs down hill and collects in holes… much like craters, they begin to feel the need to search for a way out.
4.) Jonathon Fitch’s The Will & The World – Interactive Fiction Novel meets Improv. A a multiplayer text based adventure, using readily available technology it is both a game and a tool for storytelling online. More than just one story, it is a method for content creators to build a world and engage their audience in a live environment.
